Q: I have a very small dog and always pick him up if there's a problem. Why do I need to have him trained?
A: Perhaps, you don’t. However, picking up your little dog to avoid issues almost always results in unwanted behaviors like guarding the owner, growling or snapping at other people when greeting, hugging, etc.

Q: My husband and I are older and we don’t have any young children in our house. Why do we need to worry about the dog behaving?
A: The world is full of children! There may be someone visiting with children or you may take your dog somewhere and encounter children (the vet’s office). It's our job as dog owners to prepare our dogs for all life situations. Besides, properly socialized dogs enjoy interacting with kids!

Q: My wife is pregnant with our first child and our dog is seven years of age and very well-mannered. Do we need to worry about bringing a baby into our household?
A: First, let me commend you for having a very well-mannered dog. You don't need to worry about your dog and the new arrival if you prepare your dog ahead of time. Many times, dogs resent new babies because the dog’s lifestyle changes when the baby arrives.

If any changes are to be made in the dog’s lifestyle, make them before bringing home the baby (where he sleeps, how much time he is inside, etc.). Make sure the dog is allowed to feel that it’s his baby, too!

Q: My dog won’t come when he’s called – even when I run after him. What should I do?
A: Never ever chase your dog when he won’t come, and never call your dog to you and scold and punish him. These are two main causes of dog's  “running away” behaviors. Dogs love chase games, so when he takes off, get his attention and run away from him. Then, praise him when he chases and catches you.

Q: I haven’t been able to potty train my dog, but at least she goes on the potty pads we leave by the door. Is this okay?
A: It’s okay with me, but seriously, you need to think about how you might feel about it a year from now. All dogs can be trained to relieve themselves out of doors; it’s just a matter of training and management.

There are several reasons not to use pads inside – cleaning, odor, and if you ever get a second dog, he'll also relieve himself inside because to him it smells like a doggy toilet.

Q: For our son’s birthday last year, we got him a puppy. Now, the dog is 85 pounds and he chews up everything in his path. My husband is fed up and is threatening to get rid of the dog. Is it too late to change the dog’s destructive behavior?
A: Certainly, it's not too late to change this dog’s behavior. A dog that reaches 85 pounds is just an adolescent until he is past two years of age. Without having more information about the family dynamics, and how the dog fits into it, I can’t tell you why he's so destructive, but a dog of his age needs exercise, training and time spent with his people doing fun, interesting things.
